LYNN — Helen M. (Newhall) Durgin, age 80, of Lynn, died peacefully at her home on Saturday June 17, 2017. She was the wife of the late Harold Durgin with whom she had shared 43 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Mary Ellen (Jennings) Newhall. She attended Lynn Schools and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Girls High School, Class of 1954. Helen had also continued her education at North Shore Community College and Salem State University.
She had worked as a teacher’s aide for the Lynn School Department for over 30 years.
Helen was an active lifelong Parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish in Lynn. Her life was centered on her family, especially their athletic activities. Whether it was a game being played or coached or a volunteer needed by the booster club Helen was in attendance. She loved spending her Saturday nights going out with “The Golden Girls”.
She is survived by 5 children; Maura Durgin Scully and her husband David, of Boxford, Marcy Durgin Cronin and her husband Clarke, of Marblehead, Michael Durgin and his wife Cathy, of Salem, Mark Durgin, of South Carolina, and Matthew Durgin and his wife Belinda, of Lynn, two brothers; Walter Newhall Jr. and his wife Linda, of Lynn, and Thomas Newhall, of Lynn, 13 grandchildren; Meaghan Durgin, Elizabeth (Durgin) Sipprelle, Emily (Durgin) Doggett, Madalyn Durgin, Molly Durgin, Mattie Durgin, Halle Scully, Maggie Cronin and Kylie Durgin, Jake Scully, Spencer Scully, Matthew Cronin and Joel Durgin; two great-grandchildren; Tristan and Ashlynn and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Michele Durgin, the sister of the late Patricia Dixon, and the sister-in-law of the late Ann Newhall.
Service information: Her funeral will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the SOLIMINE Funeral Home, 426 Broadway (Rte129), Lynn, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
