SAUGUS — Christmas came early for Saugus mother Amy Donovan this week, when she received a final gift from her late mother through the kindness of a stranger, who identified herself only as Grandma Santa.

Amy Donovan talks about the pillows that were sewn by a stranger with squares made by her late mother.

Donovan, 40, was surprised on Wednesday night when her father, David Thompson, told her that two pillows and a card written to her had been dropped off at his Lynn home. The pillows were made of squares that Donovan’s mother, Linda Thompson, had made on a loom before she died of lung cancer in 2014, but never had a chance to sew together.

The card was signed only as Grandma Santa. The woman wrote that her intention was that the gift would be for Donovan’s two young children, as a last gift from their grandmother. Donovan said on Thursday that she was very close to her mother and became emotional when talking about the anonymous gesture.

“I cried pretty much all last night,” Donovan said Thursday. “The kids won’t appreciate it now, but they will when they get older. I was taken aback. It’s unbelieveable that this woman would think of doing that.”

Donovan said one of the pillows was made of loom squares that were left over from a baby blanket her mother had made for her oldest daughter, Cailin, 5. The other pillow was made of squares her mother was going to make into a baby blanket for her other daughter, Samantha, 3, but never got to.

She’s not sure who the woman is. Donovan said her father remembers the woman as being very nice, but couldn’t tell her who it was. The woman heard her father was getting rid of items at his house through word of mouth and learned the story behind the squares, she added.

“I recently bought some products from your dad,” Grandma Santa wrote to Donovan. “He said they belonged to your late mother. I found several loom squares she had set aside as if to work on later, but did not finish. Your father said you have two babies. So, my thought was your mom was making for them. Well, I hope you don’t mind. I took the honor of making them into pillows for your babies. Every square was made by your mom so I just sewed them together. Sort of one last gift from their grandma.”

The gift was especially poignant for Donovan. She said her mother stated that her biggest regret was that she wouldn’t see her grandchildren grow up and that the girls wouldn’t remember her. Donovan said the pillows give the kids something to remember about their grandmother.

Donovan is hoping that she finds out who her secret Santa is one day.

“Thank you,” Donovan said she would tell Grandma Santa. “My kids thank you. In the future, they’ll appreciate it a lot more. It just brings back memories. She didn’t have to do that. It’s a very touching, selfless act to do … (I’d) just let her know that she probably didn’t think it would be a big deal, but it is for me anyway.”

By LEAH DEARBORN

MARBLEHEAD — Fans were out in full “Force” for the premiere of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” despite frigid temperatures on Thursday.

“I’m an incredible Star Wars fan,” said Jobian Day, while waiting in line at the Warwick Cinema on Pleasant Street. “I watched the movies 500 times before my fifth birthday.”

Day agreed that the cold weather might discourage some viewers from coming out for the movie’s first showing.

“I parked my tauntaun outside,” he joked, referring to the snow lizards from the Star Wars universe.

Mariel Fulghum, 14, said she was excited to see the film and that the trailers for it “looked really good.”

Warwick employee Susie Mace, who worked at the theater’s box office throughout the day and during the premiere of “The Force Awakens” last December, said both movies drew a wide mixture of ages.

Revere gets new cafe Brewin’ on Broadway

“When I was four I saw the Star Wars movie ‘A New Hope’ on VHS and that was it,” said Lynn native Tyler Richard about his longtime Star Wars fascination as he prepared to attend a screening of the film in Braintree.

Richard is a member of the 501st Legion of New England where he acts as a Stormtrooper commander in the local unit of an international costume fan club.

The 501st takes part in events in the area like Boston Comic Con. Richard said they were also contacted by numerous Showcase Cinemas locations around the state to appear in costume for the premiere of “Rogue One.”

Richard said he loved “The Force Awakens” when it debuted last December, but wasn’t completely sold on “Rogue One” until he watched the extended trailer for the movie.

“I was hooked,” he said.

Now in his 40s, Darren Goldman, manager of Newbury Comics at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, said he went to all the original Star Wars movies as a kid and that the store was setting up some merchandise in preparation for the premiere.

“I think everyone is looking forward to a fresh run of ideas,” said Goldman about the newer Star Wars films.

Average Lynn tax bill to rise by $163

By THOMAS GRILLO

LYNN It will cost more to live in the city next year.

While Lynn’s residential property tax rate is expected to fall by 58 cents, the median tax bill for a single-family home will rise by $163, a 4 percent increase. Condominium owners will see a $107 hike in taxes.

But multi-family owners will take the biggest hit with a nearly 9 percent increase, adding $452 to their bill.

“Sales of multi-families are being driven by buyers who are priced out of Malden, Medford, Somerville, Chelsea and Revere,” said Meaghan Kramer, an agent at Toner Real Estate in Lynn. “They’re coming to Lynn where they’re finding it a little more affordable.”

Businesses easing tax burden in Saugus

From January through November, 205 multi-family homes have sold in Lynn, up from 179 for the same period last year, according to the MLS Property Information Network. Median prices have jumped by 8 percent to $400,000, up from $370,000 a year ago.

Multi-families are not the only properties seeing an increase in sales and prices. Single-family home sales are up 7 percent since the first of the year while median prices have swelled by 12 percent.

“Property values are being driven by high demand,” said Peter Caron, Lynn’s chief financial officer. “There’s lots of pent-up demand and lots of people looking at a limited number of properties on the market. It’s rare to see homes selling for much under asking price.”

The commercial real estate tax rate fell by $1.39 to $30.67 from $32.06 in 2015.

The median increase for a commercial property owner will rise by $118 while the industrial user will see a $73 increase.

Caron said this is the first time in three years that commercial values have risen, up 4 percent. The city is seeing a reversal of the trend from 2008 through 2014 when the tax base shifted from residential properties to commercial due to a nearly 30 percent loss in home values.

The result, during that period, was a higher tax burden for the commercial and industrial sector.

While rising values are good news for sellers, Caron said he sees some of the same dynamics at play in the market reminiscent of the real estate meltdown from 2004-2006.

“We are starting to see the same type of market some years ago when prices rose substantially and quickly, and that led to the real estate bust,” he said.

Karen Bartlett, left, and Beth Watson hold the prizes for “Ralphie’s 12 Days of Christmas” fundraiser, which includes 10 gift cards, a mop and bucket and a gift basket.

By THOMAS GRILLO

LYNN — For the third consecutive year, Christmas will sparkle for more than 100 needy children thanks to the memory of Ralph Cronin.

The city’s late deputy tax collector never met a charity he didn’t embrace, say colleagues. He was the first to donate to any worthy cause, such as providing school supplies for children whose families couldn’t afford them, and he took out his wallet at bake sales to benefit Pop Warner, the youth football organization.

“His heart was huge,” said Beth Watson, a head clerk in the Assessor’s Office.

His generosity led Watson to launch “Ralphie’s 12 Days of Christmas.” The fundraiser is designed to benefit Santa’s Helping Hands, the Lynn nonprofit whose mission is to bring joy to children who need support at the holidays. For a donation of $10, givers get a chance to win gift certificates to local eateries including Tony’s Pub & Grill, Brothers Deli, Rolly’s Tavern on the Square, Lazy Dog Sports Bar, Little River Inn and Lido Cafe. Tickets are available in the Assessor’s office.

Lynn fired up for Christmas giving

Following Cronin’s death in 2014, Watson came up with the idea of a fundraiser and the women in the Assessor’s office agreed. So far, they have raised more than $10,000 for kids who might otherwise go without a gift on Christmas morning.

“It takes a village,” she said.

Cronin, 67, died while skiing with his wife, Linda, on the Oliverian Brook Trail in the New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest.

Cronin was born in Lynn, one of 10 children of Frederick and Bridie (Dunn) Cronin. He grew up in the Pine Hill neighborhood and attended Lynn English High School. Cronin served in the U.S. Army and earned a business degree before going to work for the city where he was employed for 30 years.

In 2011, Ralph was honored as Irishman of the Year by the Friendly Knights of St. Patrick, who deemed him an unsung hero.

Saugus brothers team up at Norwich

Saugus brothers Dan (left) and Joe Bertrand are key players on the Norwich University mens basketball team.

By JOSH KUMMINS

Now in his junior season, Joe Bertrand is seeing an expanded role ― and thriving in it ― for the Norwich University men’s basketball team.

However, this season has been special in more ways than one for the 6-foot-4, 215-pound forward. Now, there is another Bertrand on the Norwich roster; his brother, Dan, a freshman at Norwich. Although the two are at different places in their careers, being back together is exciting for the Saugus natives.

Head coach Paul Booth sees similarities in the way the brothers go about their business.

“First off, both kids are really, really wonderful young men,” said Booth, the Cadets’ 24th-year boss. “They’re hard workers, and they give us a great effort on a daily basis.”

While the bond athletes create turns into what is often described as “brotherhood,” playing with an actual brother is a unique opportunity.

The two also played together under Paul Moran at Saugus High School, but Joe views this new opportunity to sit on the same bench through a different lens.

“It’s definitely been special, but I think it’s different than high school,” Joe said of playing with his younger brother, who is one of seven freshmen on the Cadets’ roster. “I think then he seemed more like my brother on the team. Now that we’re in college, he’s just another teammate. It’s been a great experience, made us better friends.”

The elder Bertrand has seen a more prominent role (11.6 minutes per game) for the Cadets this season and leads the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) in three-point shooting at 52.6 percent. He has increased his offensive production by at least a point each year, now averaging 5.8 points per game this season.

“It’s a real strength for him, and he’s really picked us up on a couple game occasions,” Booth said of Joe Bertrand’s confidence from beyond the arc, where he’s a 10-of-19 shooter on the season. “He played very, very well at Plymouth State (on Nov. 17) and got us going, then helped us out down at Mount Ida (on Dec. 10).”

Joe finished his high school career with 1,141 points, and was a team captain and Most Valuable Player in both basketball and baseball as a senior.

After opening the season with 11 points in 16 minutes in an 81-74 win over Colby-Sawyer, Joe shot 3-for-3 from the field against Plymouth. Joe matched his season-high 11 points and recorded three rebounds and an assist in a 97-63 win over Maine-Augusta Dec. 3.

“We’re definitely off to a better start than we have been in the past,” Joe said. “We’ve played well so far, improved from the first game. We’re definitely showing good signs.”

Following last Tuesday’s 88-61 win over MCLA, the Cadets are 4-5 overall and 1-2 in GNAC play.

While Joe’s playing time has increased consistently, Dan saw his first action against Maine-Augusta, scoring two points and grabbing two offensive rebounds in three minutes.

Adjusting to the speed of the game is difficult for any freshman, but Dan ― at 6-foot-4, 160 pounds ― hopes to bring a well-rounded game to the floor in the future.

“I just need to do a little bit of everything, so there’s no noticeably weak part of my game,” said Dan, a Northeastern Conference All-Star as a senior with the Sachems. “With my height, I can try to work on rebounding. In high school, I also played at guard sometimes, so I’m just working on ball-handling skills.”

Booth has noticed development in the younger Bertrand through his first college season, as he adjusts to the speed of the game and learns the Cadets’ systems on both ends of the court.

“Danny’s contributions right now are more in practice, being a first-year player … and the hope is he continues to grow throughout the season,” Booth said. “The major adjustment he’s made is that he’s now able to compete on a daily basis and pick up things.”

Even though Dan has received limited playing time, he’s been a proud brother watching Joe make the most of his expanded role ― and having Joe alongside was a big help in what can be a difficult transition.

“Joe can definitely perform at the college level, and he’s proven it getting minutes here,” Dan said. “It’s just really cool playing with him, and having someone I knew was one less burden coming into something new. He’s always there for me.”
