Allen E. Mitchell, 83

LYNN — Allen Eugene Mitchell, age 83, of Lynn, died at the Devereux Nursing Home, Marblehead, on July 24, 2016. Allen was the husband of the late Roberta D. (Jarvis) Mitchell.

Born in Lynn, he was the son of Edith (Burrill) and James Mitchell and graduated from Lynn English High School.

Allen was employed at the General Electric in Lynn in the purchasing department and as a relocation specialist for the Lynn Redevelopment Authority, helping families new to the city find affordable housing. Allen retired after spending 20 years as a sales representative for Lymtech Scientific, headquartered in Chicopee. Allen loved his work in sales because it combined two of his favorite passions, meeting and talking to new people and traveling by car throughout all of New England. Allen was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Lynn, where he sang in the choir. He was also a lifelong member and past President of the Community Brotherhood Club and was a longtime member of the scholarship committee. Allen was instrumental in ensuring that the Brotherhood Club thrived and was a good civic partner to the City of Lynn.

Allen was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores Newsome (Archie), brother, James Mitchell, his beloved mother, Edith and Harold Hofman Jr., who he loved like a son. Allen is survived by two daughters, Michelle Mitchell of Lynn and Allison Mitchell of Arlington, Va., sister, Shirlaine Barbour, niece, Debra Paul (Jerry), grandniece Dasha Paul and great-grandniece and nephew, Aaminah Whittington and Arliss Paul, cousin, Judith Roberts, who was more like a sister, cousin, Claudia Janey and brother-in-law, Vincent Jarvis Jr. (Denise) and nephew, Christopher Jarvis.

Service information: Allen’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 30, at 11 a.m., in the CUFFE-McGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St., Lynn. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 29, from 4-8 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Community Brotherhood of Lynn Scholarship Fund, C/O John Walker, 17 Thistle St., Lynn, MA 01905-1237.
