LYNN — Many seniors say Muriel Clement brings sunshine and happiness into their lives.
Clement, coordinator of the Love Inspired Senior Enrichment Program, which meets monthly for elders who can benefit from socialization and enrichment, began organizing events for seniors six years ago.
One such event was held Saturday when Thelma Riley, 57, and Clement, hosted a traditional backyard cookout, attended by about 15 guests, at her home.
“I have been involved with the program for about five years because I think it’s important to support and celebrate our senior citizens,” Riley said. “ After all, they were there for us when we were young and needed them. It’s only fair that now we are there for them.”
Clement’s first gathering, a Christmas party at the Greater Bethlehem Temple Pentecostal Church, inspired her to continue working on behalf of these sometimes overlooked members of the community.
Since then, Clement, and a dedicated group of volunteers, have committed to providing classes, support services and events to honor, enlighten and celebrate them.
“We do things like this because we have to give love and respect to those who came before us,” said Clement. “It’s the right thing to do.”
Delores Harris, 76, a retired home care aide, has been a part of the group since last fall and said she enjoys spending time with the other members.
“Muriel is wonderful and we are so fortunate to have her in our lives,” she said. “She provides fantastic activities for us and we all look forward to seeing each other every month. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Lucy Francis, 81, agreed.
“This is a great summer day and I am happy to be here,” she said. “I love getting together with other people to share our lives and a bit of laughter, too.”
And 96-year-old Emmanuela Minnefield, who has lived on the North Shore for more than 40 years, said she has been participating for a couple of years and hopes to continue for many more.
“I am thrilled to be part of this group and I appreciate every day that we are able to see each other,” she said. “Today is beautiful and I enjoy sitting in the sun and chatting with these wonderful folks. And, it’s important to mention that the food is very good, too.”
