LYNN — It wasn’t the most successful breaking and entering crime for one 44-year-old man, as his exploits were caught on camera and he unintentionally turned himself into police.
Two residents of a Chestnut Street home, a 60-year-old woman and 76-year-old man, were awakened by their home security system around 2 a.m. Tuesday, after a motion detector activation alerted them to an intruder, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.
The camera went on and the couple caught the man on video trying to go through the saddlebags of a motorcycle in the garage area. From that footage, which the pair could see on their phone, a good description of the suspect was shared with police, Kmiec said.
About an hour later, the suspect, identified as Richard Lavorante, of Lynn, came into the police station and went to the front desk on an unrelated matter to ask a question. He had no idea he had been on camera, Kmiec said.
The same officers who responded to the break-in were in the station, saw Lavorante come in, thought he matched the suspect description and brought in the couple to identify him, Kmiec said.
Lavorante was arrested and charged with felony nighttime breaking and entering.
Police don’t think anything was stolen during the break-in.
